Trace Element Analysis
The ICP-OES device in our center is a fast technique that allows simultaneous analysis of around 70 elements at trace, minor and major concentration levels. Each element has its own energy levels, therefore wavelengths at which it can emit at these energy levels.By measuring wavelength and emission intensity, elements and their amounts in a sample can be determined. In addition to the determination of the amount of elements in the samples, it is possible to make elemental scanning. It has a wide calibration range (from ppb to %).It allows a large number of samples to be measured quickly.ICP-OES is an important technique needed for the detection of Rare Earth Elements. The device in our center is PERKIN ELMER OPTIMA 5300DV and it has auto sampler and hydride system.
Trace element analyzes are performed with the AAS device in our center, using 15 available light sources (hollow cathode lamp), using one of the flame, graphite furnace or hydride systems.
It is used for the determination of elements in biological and clinical materials, geological and environmental analyzes, especially in agriculture and food analysis. The samples that can be analyzed show a wide variety, including soil, plant materials, fertilizers, foodstuffs, all kinds of tissue materials, bodily fluids, various environmental toxic pollutants, wastewater and various waters.Analysis of solid samples is possible after solubilization in suitable solvents.
There is a LECO brand, CHNS-932 (micro) model Elemental Analyzer in our laboratory. This device is used for the analysis of organic substances containing carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur elements. With combustion at high temperatures (950-1300˚C), organic matter containing C,H,N and S is decomposed into gaseous compounds in pure oxygen environment. As a result of combustion, carbon, CO2; hydrogen, H2O; nitrogen, N2 and sulfur are transformed into SO2 gases and the device determines the percentage of C,H,N,S in the sample based on these gases.
Carbon, hydrogen and sulfur are measured sensitively by infrared absorption detector and nitrogen by thermal conductivity detector.
With the CHNS-932 (LECO) Elemental Analyzer, all homogeneous organic solids can be analyzed. The device in our laboratory is a micro-elemental analysis device and works with a maximum of 2 mg sample in the analysis of homogeneous substances such as drugs, plastics, resins, chemicals.
